Nazis after surrender Lips compressed and head down, Lieutenant General Foertch (right), Commanding General of the First German Army, leaves the building near Haar, Germany, where the unconditional surrender of the enemy Army Group G was signed under direection ot Lieutenant General Jacob L.Devers, Commanding General of the Allied Sixth Army Group May 5, 1945. Group G was composed of the First, 19th and 24th German Armies. General Foertch could only estimate that between 200,000 and 400,000 men remained in the group.
