"Les Vrais Riches," Notizen am Rand : ein Tagebuch aus dem Ghetto Łódź (Mai bis August 1944)

This diary of an anonymous young man was written on the blank pages and in the margins of the novel "Les vrais riches", alternately in English, Polish, Hebrew, and Yiddish. (A facsimile is appended on pp. 101-159.) He describes the torments of hunger and expresses the despair that makes him wish for his own death and the destruction of the whole world. News of the alleged assassination of Hitler and the progress of the Soviet army inspire momentary hope, and he plans his life after the war. The diary ends with the speech of the Nazi commander of the Łódź ghetto, Biebow, calling on all the remaining Jews to report for deportation. The editors' preface (pp. 5-34) traces the history of the Łódź ghetto and discusses the many Holocaust diaries that have been discovered, especially those from Łódź. Originalausg., 1.
