Ninth U.S. Army takes 1,400 prisoners, first day of new drive. He was captured February 23, 1945, when the Ninth Army crossed the Roer River into the Cologne plain at the start of a new large-scale offensive. The American forces, advancing along a 22-milge front, stormed 15 villages and took 1,400 prisoners during the first 24 hours of the push.
