U.S. troops enter Andernach, Germany. Two soldiers of the 11th Armored Division, Third U.S. Army, carry a wounded comrade (lower right) to a safety zone as an American tank halts at the head of this narrow street in Andernach, Germany, before a flaming Nazi vehicle it has just knocked out. Andernach, on the Rhine River, about nine miles northwest of Coblenz, was captured by Third Army units March 8, 1945, during the northward drive to link up with First U.S. Army forces. It was the first city on the Rhine taken by Third Army units.
