U.S. soldier gest America's highest award. Lieutenant Audie L. Murphy, of Farmersville, Texas, who rose from the rank of private to that of company commander during 30 months of combat duty with the Third Division, Seventh U.S. Army, is shown being congratulated by General O'Daniel, commander of the Third Division, for winning the Congressional Medal of Honor, America's highest award. Lieutenant Murphy, almost single-handed, beat off a fierce enemy attack by 200 German infantrymen supported by six tanks during the bitter fighting in the Colmar pocket in France. Lieutenant General Alexander M. Patch, Jr., made the presentation.
