Filipino troops trained to fight to free homeland. An American sergeant (standing) instructs three soldiers of the First Filipino Infantry Battalion, a unit of the U.S. Army, in the use of a trench mortar at Camp San Luis Obispo in the western state of California. A large number of Filipino troops have been trained in t he U.S. so they can participate in driving the enemy from their homeland. Many were among the powerful U.S. forces that landed in the heart of the Philippine Commonwealth, to begin its liberation after two and a half years of Japanese oppression.
