The Cassino War Memorial. The War Memorial in the Cassino war cemetery, Cassino, Italy, Sept. 25, showing the famed Benedictine Monastery on Mount Cassino in background. This memorial commemorates 4,628 officers and men of the British commonwealth who died in the World War Cassino battle, and 4,608 others who died in the Italian campaign but have no known graves. It will be inaugurated by Field Marshal the Earl Alexander of Tunis, on Sept. 30. The memorial, which has been designed by Louis de Soissons, has been built by the Imperial War Graves Commission, and is situated in the Cassino cemetery, halfway between Rome and Naples. It consists of a formal garden with an ornamental pool in the centre, from each side of which rise marble pillars with moren than thousand names recorded. Two stairways lead from the main road up the entrance, and on their walls are inscribed in English and Italian these words: 1939-1945. Within this cemetery stand monuments which bear the names of soldiers of the British commonwealth who fell ..... in battles to free Italian soil.
