German snipers captured by Allies during liberation of Rome. Guarded by U.S. soldiers, German prisoners taken in Rome, squat on the ground awaiting transport to the rear. Although the Germans had declared Rome an open city, these men were left behind to fight a rearguard action in the Italian capital. After Rome was liberated on June 4, 1994, Allied forces cleared the ternal city of the remaining enemy snipers and then continued their advance, persuing the germans northward. Between the start of the new Allied drive in Italy on May 11, and June 12, approximately 40,000 Germans were captured by Allied troops.
