U.S. General Stilwell watches tank roll toward front in Burma. During a tour on front lines in northern Burma, Lieutenant General Joseph W. Stilwell (second from right), Commander in Chief of U.S. forces in China, Burma and India, halts along a road to wach an American-built tank, manned by a Chinese crew, as it rolls toward the front leaving a trail of oust in its wake. On May 13, 1944, American and Chinese troops under Gen. Stilwell smashed through Japanese defenses in the environs of Myitkyina in the north Burma battle area after seizing a main enemy airfield nearby.
