Stimson has served his country in high public office in a brilliant carrer that spans almost a half century. Japan's invasion of Manchuria in 1931 brought from Stimson a warning that world war would result unless the Japanese were checked. Under his administration the U.S. Army has expanded from 200,000 in 1939 to 8,500,000 in 1944.
