The rise and fall of the Nazi State. Part I: The Growth of the Nazi Party. Hitler chooses a Cabinet After Becoming Chancellor. Hitler is photographed with some of the members of his first cabinet after his appointment Chancellor, under President Paul von Hindenburg. From 1928, when the Nazi Party had 12 members in the Reichstag, the power of the party in the national legislature grew rapidly. Hitler ran for president against von Hindenburg in 1932 and although defeated, his party received 196 seats in the Reichstag, giving the Nazis the largest single block of votes in the Parliament. By means of open intrigues, led by Franz von Papen (seated at right) and suported by groups of industrialists and bankers, Hitler obtained the appointment in January, 1933. He formed a coalition cabinet, including members of the Conservative (Deutschnational) Party, as well as such out-and-out Nazis as Hermann Goering (seated at left).
