Depth 49ft. Engines: Two single-reduction geared turbines Screws: Twin Decks: Five Normal speed: 23 knots Passenger accomondation: 478 cabin, 644 tourist and third class Maiden voyage: Bremen - New York in November 1923 Laid down as the Hindenburg in 1914 it was later decided to give her the name of the former surrendered vessel Columbus before launching in 1918. Construction was held up during the war and she was not completed until June 1922. In 1929 her funnels were replaced by shorter ones of greater diameter making her to appear somewhat like the Bremen and Europa. At the time of this refit she was converted from coal-firing to oil and her reciprocating machinery replaced by the presently stated type of propulsion. Re-entered service in May 1939 and made a world cruise that year. Employed in the Bremen-Southampton-New York run with a call at Plymouth in place of Southampton eastbound. When World War II broke out she was running from New York to the West Indies. On December 19, 1939 she was intercepted by the British cruiser Hyperion when attempting to sail for the fatherland. She was scuttled by her crew to avoid capture 300 miles off the coast of Virginia.
