Bequest Alisa Fuss

The Fritz Bauer Institute was given the bequest of Alisa Fuss in 2008 by the lecturer and translator Barbara Heber-Schäfer. She used the documents of the bequest for her book "Solidarität und Eigensinn. Das tätige Leben der Alisa Fuss" published in 2009. Alisa Fuss (1919-1997) was born in Berlin on April 7, 1919. In 1933, she lived in Breslau with her family, but emigrated to Palestine in 1935. She initially lived in a kibbutz organized by the Youth Aliyah, which she left between 1936 and 1939 because she rejected the attitude of the Zionist movement concerning preemptive attacks against Arabic villages. Fuss moved to Jerusalem where she took the exam to become an elementary teacher in 1949. Between 1956 and 1960, Alisa Fuss served a prison sentence. She subsequently worked as a teacher in Tel Aviv and continued her studies while working. In 1976, she started working at Bielefeld University and continued to teach until 1980. After moving to Berlin in the same year, Alisa Fuss started her advocacy work for the International League for Human Rights which she continued intensively until her death. She became the League's president in 1990 and campaigned for the peace movement in Israel and against expulsions to Turkey. On November 20, 1997, Alisa Fuss died in Tel Aviv. After description, demetallization and filing, the bequest contains 6.0 running meters. During the indexing from July to November 2021, the processor Sophia Steinmetz created an entirely new order. The holding is now structured in four sections: "opus" ("Werk"), "correspondence" ("Korrespondenzen"), "personal documents" ("Lebensdokumente") and "collections" ("Sammlungen"). The section "opus" ("Werk") is divided into two sub-sections. The first sub-section "International League for Human Rights" contains documents originating from Alisa Fuss's time as the League's president. The second sub-section "typescripts by Alisa Fuss" ("Typoskripte /Beiträge Alisa Fuss") covers typescripts of speeches, interviews and conference contributions of Alisa Fuss. The section "correspondence" ("Korrespondenzen") comprises Alisa Fuss's correspondence with several people, as well as correspondences with third parties. The section "personal documents" ("Lebensdokumente") covers the sub-section "travelogues" with reports on Alisa Fuss's foreign trips. Lastly, the section "collections" ("Sammlungen") is divided into four sub-sections. Among them are Alisa Fuss's working library which contains a collection of literature and citations, as well as pedagogical literature, and the sub-section "Bequest David Fritz Wilder" ("Nachlass David Fritz Wilder") which is mainly composed of literary works and the correspondences of David Fritz Wilder. The section "personal documents" ("Lebensdokumente") also covers collected press materials and media.
