Personal papers and correspondence of Martin Fisher <div>Martin Kenneth Fisher (formerly Martin Kurt Fleischer) was born in Berent, Westpreussen 28.1.1903. He attended school in Berent and later the Leibniz Gymnasium in Berlin. He studied medicine from April 1921 to August 1922 but had to suspend his studies. He was an apprentice and later official at the Deutsche Bank, Berlin from 1922 to 1927. From December 1927 to March 1933 he continued then completed his medical studies in Germany. In March 1933 he was sacked on account of his Jewish faith. From November 1933 to February 1935 he studied medicine at medical School in Glasgow. Thereafter he was employed at a number of assistant GP posts or House surgeon around the UK. There followed a stint in the British Army, Royal Army Medical Corps, achieving the rank of major. He became a naturalised British citizen on 5 August 1947. He settled in Todmorden, Lancs, from Jan 1948 and continued working as GP until 1970 when he had to retire on health grounds. Martin married Miriam Sumberg in December 1947. They had met each other whilst employed by the British forces in Egypt. At one time he was a member of the Manchester Congregation of British Jews.</div><div><br /></div><div>Martin’s sister Lotte Lewinski and her husband, Julius, along with Martin’s mother were murdered during the Holocaust. For a time Martin looked out for his nephew, George Lewis, son of Lotte and Julius. It is assumed that Martin’s father, Mordecai Fleischer, died sometime before WWII.</div><div><br /></div> Open
