In June 1941, Siauliai, Lithuania, where Nesse lived with her closeknit family, was occupied by Nazi Germany. The collection consists of a set of tefillin and pouch relating to the experiences of Aharon Ben-Zion Katz and his son Nachman (later Nathan) before the Holocaust in Rietavas and Klaipeda, Lithuania, during the Holocaust in the ghetto in Siauliai, Lithuania, and in hiding in the countryside, and after the Holocaust in Israel and the United States.

Aviva Slesin was born in 1942 in Šiauliai, Lithuania. She was smuggled out of the ghetto and placed in hiding for the duration of the war. Her rescuers were Matilda and Juozas Salenekas. Aviva was reunited with her mother, Sulamith Slesin, and her stepfather, Abraham Slesin, in Munich after the war, and they immigrated to the United States in 1950.

Percy Haid, b. Riga, Latvia 1913-d. Chicago 1977. Composer and musician active in the Kovno ghetto. Haid performed and arranged music for the Ghetto Orchestra, and played piano and accordion at the ghetto's "coffee house," the Cafe Monika.
