American troops enter Cisterna. American soldiers of the Allied Fifth Army enter the battle-battered town of Cisterna, in west central Italy, from which the Germans were driven on May 25, 1944. Allied forces, continuing their hard-pressing drive along the roads toward Rome, freed the Italian capital from the enemy less than two weeks later, on June 4.
