U.S. troops move up in Normandy. U.S. troops pass through a lane of trees mined by the retreating Germans in Goutances, Normandy. Charges like the parcel of TNT whith can be seen on the trunk of the tree at right were placed on every other tree along this route in an attempt to impede the progress of advancing American armor. Coutances, captured by American troops July 29, 1944, is some 18 miles west of St. Lo and was the key to the escape routes for thousands of German soldiers hommed in further north.
