The bombing of Cassino. This picture was taken March 15, 1944, as 2,500 tons of bombs rained down on Cassino in Italy. When the barrage lifted, the fight for the ruins began. New Zealand troops leading the way captured the enemy strongpoint in the ruined Hotel Continental (below Castle Hill), moving up the hill and captured the Nazi stronghold there later. Driving along a secretly built mountain road, Allied tanks have outflanked enemy positions and are reported approaching Highway Six - the road to Rome. Cassino, fiercely fought over for weeks, has at last been wrested from the Germans.
